July 12, 2013, Rybinsk. – On 11 July 2013 Vladimir Babkin, general director of the federal state unitary enterprise (FGUP) P.I. Baranov CIAM visited NPO Saturn.
The purpose of the visit was to get familiar with the current status of work conducted by the company’s design and development bureau and discuss the prospects of interaction in the frame of the federal target program “Development of Russian civil aviation engineering in 2002-2010 and for the period until 2015”, the State armaments program for 2011 – 2020 and in relation to the industrial gas turbine programs development.
The head of CIAM visited the premises of NPO Saturn’s rapidly developing research & development and experimental infrastructure and took part in the meeting held at the main design bureau. Ilya Fedorov, NPO Saturn chief executive officer and Yuriy Shmotin, NPO Saturn head of design familiarized the guest with the strategic fields of work and prospective activities of the company’s design departments for which eventual cooperation with CIAM is under study.
NPO Saturn invests significant funds in the modernization and upgrade of its production facilities used for serial production of the SaM146 engine as well as its industrial gas turbine engines and cruise missile rockets. The company also pays a lot of attention to the development of technologies, methodologies and calculation tools needed for engineering new high-tech products.
Nowadays the NPO Saturn design and development bureau is fitted with the equipment for prototyping, composite material manufacturing, working with modern high-temperature materials, conducting research and testing processes intrinsic to a gas turbine engines and its components.
Many years of NPO Saturn’s work aimed at the improvement of its already existing products and development of new engines as well as the creation of a backlog of technical knowledge has allowed the company to create critical technologies and baseline design configurations for the main components of the fifth-generation military and civil engines. Besides its main application, the accumulated backlog is successfully used in the development of industrial and marine gas turbine engines of the new generation.

Special emphasis should be given to the existence of the state-of-the-art design and development bureau, the most powerful design bureau in the Russian engine-building industry which can boast some serious achievements especially when it comes to small-size and short-life engines, the bureau that has managed to establish a formidable relationship with Russia’s leading aviation industry institutions.”
