NPO Saturn has completed a state R&D contract for developing the base technologies, materials and equipment for combined-cycle power plants derived from high-power gas turbine installations

January 27, 2015, Rybinsk. - NPO Saturn has completed a state R&D contract for developing the base technologies, materials and equipment for combined-cycle power plants derived from high-power gas turbine installations in the frame of implementing the most important innovative projects prioritized by the Russian state. The results of the performed work serve as the first step towards the creation of a modernized high-power turbine (GTE-110M) featuring enhanced performance and extended life.
A state contract for conducting research and development was signed between the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation and NPO Saturn on 23.05.2012.
The conducted R&D activities comply with the Federal law №261-ФЗ “On energy saving and increasing energy efficiency, and on amending specific legislative acts of the Russian Federation” adopted on 23.11.2009.
The R&D activities comprised the development of the design concept of a prospective combined-cycle power plant derived from a high-power gas turbine installation and the development of prospective materials and base technologies to be used in the production of blades and nozzle vanes and combustion chambers, as well as the materials and technologies of applying nanostructured coatings on these components.
In the course of the R&D work, the company completed the scopes of work for devising new materials and base technologies for the critical engine components and developed the standards for applying these new materials and technologies in serial production of the future combined-cycle power plants and gas turbine installations.
Some of the main R&D tasks were to develop a production process for directional crystallization of turbine blades, new materials for the blades of the high-power gas turbine installation, and also to develop chemical compositions and processes of application of nanostructured thermal barrier coatings for the combustion chamber liners and turbine blades and nozzle vanes.
In order to modernize the critical modules of the engine, an experimental combustion chamber liner was designed allowing to decrease nitrogen oxide emission and ensuring the MTBR of the gas turbine installation of, at least, 25 000 hours.
The prototypes of turbine blades and low-emission combustion chamber for the high-power gas turbine installation were fabricated and tested within the R&D scope.
Tremendous work was carried out by the NPO Saturn engineers conjointly with the leading industrial R&D institutes and organizations, including NPO TsKTI, CIAM, TsNIITMASh and Protective coating technological systems Ltd.; the test facilities of NPO Saturn were also used in the process.
Some of the newly devised approaches allowing to optimize the operating modes and enhance the performance of the high-power gas turbine installations were put to use during the scheduled maintenance activities performed of the GTE-110 operated at the Ivanovo combined-cycle power plant.
As a reminder, the GTE-110 gas turbine engine manufactured by NPO Saturn represents a power-generation gas turbine in the power category exceeding 110 MW (ISO 114,5 MW) with a fully mastered production cycle. The GTE-110 is designed for use as part of electric power plants in the single or combined cycle for producing electric (110 MW) and heat power.
The work on enhancing the Russian competitive gas turbine will be continued.
