February 19, 2015, Rybinsk. - In the frame of the activity of the Rostec State Corporation focused on the design of UAV-based complexes and development of modern technologies for their manufacture, a project utilizing additive technologies is currently underway. NPO Saturn has played an active role in the project elaboration and designing of the said unmanned aerial vehicle.
The UAV was presented on 10 February 2015 in VIAM at the All-Russian conference on additive technologies hosted by the Defense-Industrial Chamber (DIC).
The project received a high appraisal from the DIC commissioner D. Rogozin, head of the R&T council of the DIC Y. Mikhailov and the representatives of the Ministry of Defense.
A letter of gratitude addressed to NPO Saturn chief executive officer Ilya Fedorov received from Alexey Fedorov, executive director of the Rostec aviation projects, specifically read:
“Thanks to the effort of your team, a unique aerial vehicle was produced and prepared for testing in the shortest term imaginable. It is spectacular that the process of manufacturing the vehicle took less than two days.
Please accept my congratulations on the success achieved in the implementation of this breakthrough project.
I hereby express my sincere gratitude to you personally and to the employees of NPO Saturn for the significant contribution to the realization of this unique project.”
Additive technologies without a shadow of doubt are on the list of the major achievements of the XXI century; they demonstrate a great potential in reducing costs associated to the manufacturing of a whole array of products and play a crucial role in the fast-growing UAV market. According to Denis Fedoseev, additive technologies project manager at NPO Saturn, “this is a perfect environment for additive technologies: the use of additive technologies allows a design engineer to propose varying solutions with regard to the tooling at no extra cost, which saves money, time and minimizes risks. Additive technologies provide a designer with a maximal freedom for design, take, for instance, the use of so-called “bionic” structures for reinforcing the UAV structure. Even complex aerodynamic structures can be produced economically and quickly using 3D data. Different parts, such as hinges can be easily integrated into the wings or the fuselage in one production operation which translates into decreasing the module weight and the time to assemble it. The participation of NPO Saturn’s additive technologies center in the joint project of creating the first-in-Russia UAV utilizing additive technologies underscores the high level of competence the company has in this field of activity.”
