February 24, 2015, Rybinsk. - NPO Saturn played host to a visit of Marcos Pinotti, a professor, member of the administrative council of the Federal university of Minas Gerais (UFMG, Brazil) and Evgeniya Shamis, general director of Sherpa S Pro (Moscow, Russia) and advisor to the vice-governor of the Samara Region.
Marcos Pinotti ranks among the top 100 world scientists in the field of bioengineering and bionics and is the author of the biggest number of patents in Brazil; he is also advisor to the office of the president of Brazil for technological development, member of the Brazil-U.S.A. council for the future of engineering and president of the Latin-American society for biomaterials. Together with Evgeniya Shamis they founded the International Workshop “Innovations and Clusters” (Brazil).
Their visit to Rybinsk came as a logical follow-up to the meetings with the representatives of NPO Saturn in Brazil in the frame of the “Collaboration across the ocean. Discovering innovative Brazil”, a joint program of Sherpa S Pro and RVC
According to NPO Saturn director of innovative development Dmitriy Ivanov, “to be able to create something together, it is essential to know each other personally; confidence is built on it, and confidence is the foundation for any joint work. Any progress starts from collaborating in science though educational programs. However, the ultimate outcome of the meetings and negotiations we’ve had is to find opportunities for a new business, capitalizing on the capabilities and competences of NPO Saturn and Brazilian companies.”
The guests of NPO Saturn visited the production and engineering facilities of the company as well as The New Tooling Solutions Ltd. and VolgAero, and touched base on the possibilities of eventual collaboration in the frame of the territorial innovation cluster Gas turbine machinery and power engineering whereby NPO Saturn is the coordinator.
Following the meeting results, Marcos Pinotti noted: “It was a fruitful and inspiring visit. It was interesting to see how such a complex and diverse company as Saturn, having a high level of liability (due to its production of aircraft engines) has been able to organize its operating system in such a beautiful and efficient manner. I saw plenty of opportunities where we could collaborate with Saturn both in terms of educational initiatives and student exchange, and using Saturn-designed technologies to help develop different branches of Brazilian industry, and even open new businesses. I’m really excited to be here.”
According to Evgeniya Shamis, “the visit to NPO Saturn came as a next step of work started in Brazil which could translate into concrete products, technologies, or companies. Into what will propel both Russian and Brazilian regions and businesses. We also spoke about the further development of NPO Saturn through clusters since one of the main fields of Sherpa S Pro’s activity is sustainable development of global competitive clusters. In modern-day conditions you can no longer operate only on the Russian level. Today, the only way to win is to be a possessor of the world-class competences and take active part in the international processes. Therefore, for us it is very important to have witnessed at Saturn not only the competences in the field of engine manufacturing but also an orientation for the emergence of start-up’s which could restore the previously missing links of the chain, and an inclination towards projects of searching for new solutions and international partnerships.”
