A research and technology conference dedicated to the 100 years since the birth of the chief designer P.A. Kolesov inaugurated the forums program

March 23, 2015, Rybinsk. - A research and technology conference dedicated to the 100 years since the birth of the chief designer P.A. Kolesov inaugurated the program of the Second international forum Innovation. Technology. Production held in Rybinsk. Just like the forum itself, the conference will last three day, namely 23-25 March 2015.
The event organizers, NPO Saturn and the Rybinsk P.A. Solovev State Aviation Technical University, timed the R&T conference to the name of the eminent engine designer Petr Kolesov (1915 - 2004) not by coincidence. For twenty four years Mr. Kolesov had been at the helm of the Rybinsk engine design bureau. Under his leadership, the design bureau devised the engines for Russia’s first supersonic missile carrier, a supersonic civil aircraft and a supersonic vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Each of the said engines was going ahead of its time making a new step in the history of Russian engine manufacturing.
The interest in the R&T conference proved to be very high - around 300 people from Kazan, Perm, Samara, Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Novosibirsk and other cities have accepted the invitation to attend the event in Rybinsk as participants or listeners. These are the professors, scientific associates, undergraduate and postgraduate students of technical higher learning institutions, scientists and specialists representing the organizations and companies integrated in the Rostec State Corporation, and active and potential contractors for R&D activities in the interests of the gas turbine engine manufacturing industry.
During the plenary session taking place on the first day of the R&T conference, the agenda included the topical issues and prospects of development of the Russian aircraft engine manufacturing. The three-day work in sections is built around five main directions: “Study and design of materials”, “Gas dynamics and combustion”, “Dynamics and strength”, “Production engineering in the machine building industry”, and “Metrology and certification”. The choice of these basic fields of science, well known to the undergraduate and postgraduate students of technical higher learning institutions, as the topics of discussion reflects the aspiration of the organizers to make it a research and technology rather than research and practical use conference - more biased on research and bringing closer industrial companies and higher learning institutions. In order to get to know the company better, the forum participants were given an opportunity to visit the NPO Saturn site and discuss the matters of interest to them with the company’s employees right on the shop floor.
Based on each section’s results, three best presenters will be determined and receive memorable rewards. But the main reward for the winners will be the publication of their presentations in the scientific magazines on the VAK list (Higher attestation commission under the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation).
“Russia has been faced with a drastic gap between the industry and the creators of new knowledge representing higher learning institutions. Therefore, we’ve decided to create a platform for bringing together their mutual interests, - notes doctor of technical sciences, NPO Saturn general designer Yuriy Shmotin, speaking of the importance of the R&T conference. -  To the companies in the engine manufacturing business, the role of science in creating new engines is very significant. Today many people speak about innovations but few about science. Innovations are the ideas, developments, or competences integrated into a product-creating process. When devising your innovation strategy, you have to identify all the interactions and partnerships and pinpoint those who generate ideas which the company could subsequently use in achieving its competitive edge. And we will not be able to do it without the implication of the scientific community, higher learning institutions, their developments, or without getting undergraduate and postgraduate students to participate in the prospective R&D fields of the high-tech industrial companies. Collaboration with R&D institutes, small-sized innovative companies, institutes and branch organizations will allow us to qualitatively develop the field of building a research and technology backlog of knowledge.”
Professor, doctor of technical sciences, P.A. Solovev RGATU president Valeriy Poletaev: “We were inviting our long-standing friends to attend the R&T conference, our comrades with whom for many decades we had been working in the field of engine manufacturing and training of specialists. We invited them to celebrate together the 100th anniversary since the birth of P.A. Kolesov, a renowned Russian designer, our fellow-townsman to pay him homage and speak of the issues posed to our industry today, and also of how dynamically each enterprise, research institution, branch institute, or educational institution is developing. Undoubtedly, the fact that RGATU has recently been granted the status of the Numerical modeling center - a UEC competence center is a very significant event to us. I spoke about it during my presentation at the conference’s plenary session.”
Professor, doctor of technical sciences, dean of the aircraft engines faculty at the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) Alexey Agulnik: “For many years the Moscow Aviation Institute has enjoyed a close relationship with the Rybinsk University and NPO Saturn based on research and educational projects. This R&T conference is yet another chance to communicate with our colleagues, share with them about our projects and achievement, learn about the same from them, and to come to an agreement regarding new joint project and programs. The subject of my presentation delivered during the plenary session is gas turbine engines of the new generation. We have to move ahead of time, we have to forecast which technologies will take longer to develop, and involve students into these cutting-edge programs and projects. I have come here with such ideas and I’m spreading them around. What I really liked is that the organizers of the forum have managed to get together in Rybinsk a very representative crowd. In other words, they have managed to create a nice and broad platform for people to communicate with each other. It is essential since science is built in an information field.” 
Economic science candidate, head of the department of the private-state partnership in the innovative field at the Higher School of Economics Konstantin Vishnevskiy: “I’m grateful to the organizers for having invited me to come to this conference with a lecture. The subject of my presentation is “Foresight in the field of mechanical engineering: opportunities for Russia”. We are also presenting a system of technological roadmaps showing long-term development of the aviation industry. The forum is a superb venue for collaboration between science, business, and the state. In the frame of this event we plan to discuss with the leading Russian experts the key tendencies of the Russian engine manufacturing development.”

The NPO Saturn Research and Production Association (OJSC) is an engine-manufacturing company specialized in the design and development, production and after-market support of gas turbine engines for military and commercial aviation, naval ships and power-generating plants and gas-pumping units. The association is part of the Union of Russian mechanical engineers, an all-Russian public organization whereby the regional branch is headed by I. N. Fedorov, NPO Saturn CEO.
