March 25, 2015, Rybinsk. - The technology of forming highly durable thermoplastic polymer composite materials and 3D woven composite parts obtained through RTM (resin transfer molding) were the highlights of the “Polymer composites” section at the international technological forum entitled “Innovations. Technologies. Manufacturing” held in Rybinsk.
7 key-note reports were presented in the frame of the section. Apart from the NPO Saturn speakers, the reports were presented by the representatives of Toho Tenax Europe GmbH (Germany), Compose SAS (France), KraussMaffei (Germany), Pinette Emidecau Industries (France), the head of design of the IF AB Universal and the head of the KNITU-KAI composite technologies center. The experts reviewed the prospects and difficulties related to the introduction of polymer composite materials into jet engines, assessed the ways of recycling thermoplastic polymer composite materials and the new trends in creating reinforcing structures for polymer composites such as RTM, radial weaving, conventional weaving and tufting. The section participants got familiarized with the international manufacturing experience including the creation of molds and resin transfer molding using thermoplastic polymer composite materials and discussed the requirements to the associated production machine tools and tooling.
The section moderator Artem Korotygin, NPO Saturn polymer matrix-based composite materials project leader noted that “developing a truly high-quality product is not feasible without involving the science and commercial enterprises that have achieved some tangible results in a dedicated polymer composite materials domain of knowledge. Today, we have exchanged some project implementation experience, discussed the advancement of the cutting-edge technologies such as forming thermoplastic polymer composite materials and RTM which will ensure high competitiveness for the Russian gas turbine engine manufacturers in the soon-to-come future. One of the main world trends in the development of polymer composites is the increased production automation and decreased manual labor. Among the most promising technologies are thermal forming of thermoplastic polymer composite materials, injection casting, hybrid technologies and thermoplastic resin transfer molding. The development and introduction of such technologies will allow solving one of the main problems related to polymer composite materials - total lack of repairability.”
