LXIII Scientific-and-Technological Session of the Russian Academy of Sciences dedicated to gas turbines was held at NPO Saturn

This is the topic of LXIII Scientific-and- Technological Session of the Russian Academy of Sciences held at NPO Saturn PJSC on September 20-21. More than one hundred of representatives from Russian Academic, Universities and industry research centers, engine and power plant manufacturing companies, operators of gas turbine units and potential customers took part in the session.
In 1993, 2001 and 2008, three Scientific-and-Technological Sessions dedicated to gas turbines were held on the basis of NPO Saturn. The organizers of this new session – Committee on Gas Turbines of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Association of Gas Turbine Technologies for Power Sector and Industry, NPO Saturn PJSC and All-Russian Thermal Engineering Institute – are sure that such events contribute to strengthening of relations in the sphere of power generation equipment production, help to determine the areas and perspectives of further cooperation.

Yury Shmotin, General Designer of NPO Saturn PJSC, says: ‘It’s a great honor for NPO Saturn to host the session of the Russian Academy of Sciences dedicated to gas turbines. Definitely, production of high capacity gas turbines, medium-sized industrial gas turbines and marine engines is one of the key priorities of NPO Saturn business. Our development concept is based on three main product lines: industrial and marine gas turbine engines, including high capacity engines, military engines and civil aviation engines. Over the last 10 years, the share of industrial gas turbines in NPO Saturn portfolio has increased significantly. This is a specific field with specific technologies which require development. The NPO Saturn industrial gas turbines are produced with application of the materials allowing these engines to operate in the near-shore zone and also on the offshore platforms’.

The program of Scientific-and-Technological Session included reports on significant events in the sphere of Russian aviation and industrial gas turbine machinery. Particularly, the report on the progress of the PD-14 program implementation, on application of the PD-14 engine technologies for development of maximum capacity industrial gas turbines - says Aleksandr Inozemtsev, General Designer of Aviadvigatel OJSC.

‘These are the events where specialists can exchange the up-to-date information in the sphere of gas turbine machinery - adds Aleksandr Inozemtsev. – We have promising perspectives not only for the industrial gas turbines. Recently we have signed the agreement with NPO Saturn on future cooperation in a new Russian aviation project ‘The PD-35 engine’ aimed at creation of a  Russian large-size aviation engine family providing 30-40 ton thrust. This super project will be the next one starting after the PD-14 project.'

Among the other topics discussed at the session were the issues of GTD-110 engine development, creation of a high capacity engine with the increased power and improved efficiency. The dedicated seminar was held on the issue of the upgraded GTD-110M engine launch into the market, the seminar was organized by NPO Saturn PJSC jointly with Executive Committee of CIS electric power council.

On the closing day of Scientific-and-Technological session, the competition of young research engineers and design engineers was held. During the plant tour the participants of the session could visit the design, test and production facilities of the company which remains the only company in Russia producing the industrial gas turbines with capacity above 100 mW and its combined cycle derivatives.

The current geopolitical situation is challenging, it boosts the development of the domestic power equipment and growth of its supply to the market.

In particular, the interest to GTD-110M, the only high capacity domestic gas turbine power unit, has significantly increased.

Igor Budakov, deputy Chief Engineer of Inter RAO- Elektrogeneratsia subsidiary ‘Ivanovskie CCGT’ supposes ‘if we have reliable gas turbines and in the short run we hope to have a reliable GTD-110 gas turbine, an efficient and light-weight turbine, we will feel confident in our niche of the market’.  

Gurgen Olkhovsky, the Chairman of the Committee on Gas Turbines of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the associate of the Russian Academy of Sciences, president of the All-Russian Thermal Engineering institute says: ‘Rybinsk-based NPO Saturn is the only company in the country able to produce and deliver the gas turbines rated at 110 mW for the domestic power sector. Currently this machine is being upgraded, it has huge perspectives. High capacity gas turbine is in demand for the supply of relatively big cities of the country both with electricity and heat.  In the optimistic scenario, production up to 200 units is possible’.

Stressing the importance of development of the domestic gas turbine sector, Gurgen Olkhovsky notes: ‘The engine-manufacturing companies are arranged so as to produce their main products. It is not easy to manufacture high capacity gas turbines in the engine-manufacturing company. But if we think about the development of the country we should create such turbines within the country thus combining the efforts of aviation engine manufacturing companies and power plant manufacturing companies. The scope and importance of this task is the same as that of space or atomic programs’.

Research and production association Saturn [NPO Saturn] (PJSC) is an engine-manufacturing company specialized in the design and development, production and after-market support of gas turbine engines for military and commercial aviation, power generation and gas compression as well as for ships and vessels.
