On Thursday, October 20th, it will be the 100th anniversary of NPO Saturn (PJSC), one of the biggest enterprise of the United Engine Corporation (a Rostec State Corporation company), located in Rybinsk (Yaroslavl region). Anniversary celebrations will be held in Rybinsk from the 20th to the 22nd October. Numerous guests such as shareholders, customers, partners, enterprise’s veterans, management and several thousand strong team of the company will take part in the celebration ceremony.
NPO Saturn is an engine-manufacturing company specialized in the design and development, production and after-market support of gas turbine engines for military and commercial aviation, power generation and gas compression, maritime propulsion units. The company is a parent company of "Engines for civil aviation" Division, UEC's business unit.
"The employees of the company made substantial personal and professional contribution in development of the company ", - says Sergey Chemezov, CEO of Rostec State Corporation. - Owing to their laborious and well co-ordinated work, the products of the enterprise are well demanded and notable for standing quality. I am sure, in future research production association "NPO Saturn" will progress dynamically and promote new advanced high-technology products to the market.
Today, NPO Saturn in cooperation with other UEC's enterprises implements quite a number of major projects in civil and military fields. French-Russian PPS SaM146 is produced for Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft in collaboration with Safran Aircraft Engines Company. The company continues production of D-30KP engines for Il-76 aircraft family. NPO Saturn's Design Office has developed AL-55I engine for combat-training aviation. Another direction of Rybinsk engine builders is small-sized gas turbine engines installed on aircraft-based and sea-based cruising missiles. NPO Saturn is determined to be the center of maritime gas turbine manufacture within UEC.
"NPO Saturn's age-long history evokes respect and sincere admiration", - says Alexander Artyukhov, CEO of UEC JSC. -The company passed through a challenging but glorious way of engine building development in Russia. Mastering of a new type of the unique technique implies intensive work of several generations of specialists - designers, engineers, workers who often subjected their lifestyle to production interests and reinforcement of defensive capacity of the country. It was a case during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war time, when our country aimed at taking leading position in this high-technology industry.
As of 2015, 70% of NPO Saturn PJSC's business (as of 2015) refer to aircraft products, 6% refer to ground industrial application products, 20% refer to research and advanced development, 4% refer to other products. Every year the company produces 600 gas turbines engines of aircraft, ground and maritime application. There are NPO Saturn's customers in 30 countries.

The State Reward of the Soviet Union was many times awarded to Rybinsk engine building plant. Nowadays, the company is highly appreciated by the Government for the contribution in defense capacity, energy and transport security of our Motherland".
NPO Saturn implements ambitious innovation politics, i.e. additive technologies, 3D-simulation are used, and the parts made of polymeric composite materials are introduced. "Additive technologies center" was established at NPO Saturn. The most perspective and industry demanded fields of additive technologies are available in the Additive technologies center.
Within recent years the company implemented a range of actions aimed at technological upgrading and production retooling. Thus, new production facilities dedicated to compressor airfoils processing, turbine airfoils applying the advanced engineering processes and equipment were put in operation.
Today, NPO Saturn PJSC is a company with more than 12 000 employees, 12 000 equipment units, 1 mln square meters of production facilities. Taking into account subsidiary and affiliate companies, the staffing level is 14 000 employees. In accordance with strategic development plans and the associated estimated employees' demand, NPO Saturn interacts with education establishments and implements vocational-oriented education to attract future employees. Every year about 200 young specialists are employed (66 % of the employees graduated higher education establishments) at NPO Saturn. At the present time, young employees (at the age of 16 to 35) compose about one third of the company's staff.
On the eve of the company's 100th anniversary 1 500 people - employees' family members - had an excursion to NPO Saturn. They visited production facilities, design office, test facilities and the museum. Such an extensive activity was one of the numerous social actions implemented in 2016 for the 100th anniversary of the enterprise.
The company dates back to 1916, when construction of the automobile plant "Russky Reno" JSC in Rybinsk started. The plant was thereafter nationalized and cars to ensure Red army's needs were restored here. Beginning with 1920s, the enterprise was closely related to the domestic aircraft industry. An executive order was taken in 1924 about transfer of the enterprise to the aircraft industry enterprise group. Number 26 was assigned to Rybinsk aviation plant. In 1928 the original series of M-17 engines for reconnaissance aircraft R-5 and heavy bomber aircraft TB-1 and TB-3 was manufactured. Within 10 years since 1928 the plant manufactured 8 thousands of M-17 production engines, which were installed on 30 types of military and civil aircraft. In 1934 Rybinsk engine builders proceeded to manufacture of M-100 engine for high-speed bomber aircraft SB.
Design Bureau - 2 of Moscow Aviation Institute headed by G. S. Skubachevsky was established in 1939, and Rybinsk engine building design bureau originates from it. Development of M-105 engine, which was widely used on the aircraft Yak-1, Yak-7, Yak-9, Pe-2, Er-2 and etc. during the Great Patriotic War, started. At the turn of 1930-1940s the plant was considered the best enterprise of the precision engineering in Europe. In-line assembly of aircraft engines enabled to manufacture 30 engines per day. By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War the plant increased engine manufacture for combat aircraft up to 45 engines per day.
In October 1941 thousands of enterprise's employees and the equipment were evacuated to Ufa. Early in spring 1942 aircraft engine production restarted in Rybinsk, and some months later repair and then serial production of the engines so much needed at front line was set up.
In the post-war period the enterprise started production of piston engines ASH-73TK for bomber aircraft Tu-4. In the late 1950’s turbojet engines, a new type of the aeronautical product, were developed. Rybinsk designers developed VD-7 engines installed on long-range strategic bombers 3Ì, Ì-50, supersonic bombers Tu-22. In 1960 serial production of turbojet engines AL-7F-1 started (designed by A. M. Lyulka) for bomber-fighters Su-7B, fighter-interceptor aircraft Su-9.
Since the early 1970s engines D-30KU and D-30KP for Il-62M and Il-76 aircraft and since the early 1980s - engine D-30KU-154 for passenger liner Tu-154M became the basis of NPO Saturn's activity within civil application. These engines were developed by P.A. Solovyev. A family of D-30KU/KP/KU-154 engines became the largest one in the civil aircraft segment of the country.
Throughout the history of Rybinsk engine building plant about 40 types of products were designed, almost 50 thousands of aircraft engines were manufactured for fighter aircraft, bomber aircraft, transport aircraft and passenger liners.
At different times the enterprise manufactured snowmobiles, outboard engines, spare parts for agriculture, numerical control machines. Diesel engines and separators left the assembly line of the plant; Rybinsk enterprise became the first one in Russia to start production of skates and skateboards.
Beginning with 2000, more than ten new NPO Saturn's developments passed through official tests, having obtained official test certificates, Type Certificates or Conformity Statements. Now the company produces about 600 engines of different application per year.
