United Engine Corporation (EUC, a Rostec State Corporation company) has commissioned the first Russian Assembly and Testing Facility for marine gas-turbine engines and units on the premises of NPO Saturn. Vladimir Putin, President of the RF, started tests of the M35R-1 gas-turbine unit with the M70FRU-2 engine during his visit to the company.
The Russian marine gas turbine building base is developed within the framework of the import substitution program: with the benefit of competences in the development of marine engines and having prototypes of such engines within the line of advanced products, UEC has not produced propulsion plants for the Navy of the RF in batches so far.
One of the crucial tasks in the implementation of the project, besides development activities, technological upgrading, and industrialization, became the establishment of a test base enabling all types of tests for marine units with the simulation of real operating conditions. The estimated construction cost of the Assembly and Testing Facility is around 6.7 bln rubles.
Two test beds form the basis of the Assembly and Testing Facility: the first one has a capacity of 15 MW max, the capacity of the second is 40 MW max. The technological solutions applied in the design of the facility allow over 20 different configurations of marine units to be tested. In addition it is possible to test both the whole power plant and its components (for example, a diesel-gas-turbine unit includes a diesel engine, a gas-turbine engine, a marine gear, and local control systems). One of the features of the unique facility is the maximum automation of work processes, in particular, the measurement information acquisition system.
“Today Rostec’s companies have all competences in the development of marine engines and prototypes of such engines within the line of advanced products. The opening of the facility will enable us to organize serial production and maintenance of propulsion plants for the Navy of the Russian Federation in 2018”, – said Sergey Chemezov
, CEO of Rostec.
By now the predelivery tests of the M35R-1 unit have been started in the new facility. M35R-1 is designed for the world’s largest air-cushion ship as an aerial propeller drive. The unit includes the M70FRU-2 engine, a gear, their connecting transmissions, and a control system. The M70FRU-2 engine’s feature is higher values of efficiency
and time between overhauls as compared to the previously used analogues. Both the unit and the engine have been developed by NPO Saturn.
“The implementation of the import substitution program which has affected all the product lines of EUC to a greater or lesser extent, is a serious task for the holding, – pointed out Alexander Artyuhov
, General Director of United Engine Corporation. – Carrying out a range of activities on marine products, we have mastered a new important competence as related to the whole set of tests for marine engines and units on their basis. This competence will meet the demands of the Navy of the RF for marine propulsion plants.
Within the establishment of the Russian marine gas turbine building base there are some development activities in progress. These activities will allow us to proceed as early as next year to the serial production of the M70FRU, M70FRU-2, M70FRU-R (“reverse”), M90FR engines, the M35Р and M70 units as well as units based on advanced products with upgraded gear
complexes and control systems.
“We have made a considerable breakthrough in building up fully import-independent production of marine gas-turbine power plants and we realize the importance and responsibility of our work in the solution of national tasks, – says Viktor Polyakov
, Deputy General Director – NPO Saturn Managing Director. – Today the company’s staff is mastering the most state-of-the-art technologies for the creation of marine gas-turbine engines and is working at the formation of technology advance for the development of future marine engines and units".
The following companies of EUC are involved in the implementation of marine programs in collaboration with NPO Saturn: Engineering and Research Production Centre “SALUT”, JSC “STAR”, and a number of other enterprises and industry research institutes – CIAM, “Zavod “Phiolent” JSC, JSC “UNPP “Molnia”, and others.Contacts for press:Alexander Nevara, +7 919 775 03 51Anastasia Denissova,+7 905 767 83 24Research and production association Saturn [NPO Saturn] (PJSC) is an engine-manufacturing company specialized in the design and development, production and after-market support of gas-turbine engines for military and commercial aviation, power generation and gas compression as well as for ships and vessels.
