Zhukovsky, July 18, 2017
Press-release

Development of a critical baseline technology of ceramic composite materials (CCM) application for gas-turbine aircraft engines parts has been launched by Rybinsk PJSC UEC-Saturn (a United Engine Corporation company of Rostec State Corporation).

Critical technologies are being mastered in UEC-Saturn. Without their implementation it is impossible to produce high-tech products which are competitive on the global market. These are additive technologies, ceramic and polymer composite materials, robot-aided laser welding and perforation, thermo-barrier coatings.

Ceramic composite material is a multicomponent material made on the basis of a ceramic matrix with armor-clad filling compound operable at high temperatures of gases (more than 1000 °C). It guarantees long-life operation of parts without additional cooling. Ceramic material with its embrittlement properties is reinforced by continuous or dispersive fibers, thus ensuring high crack resistance.

“Analysis of the contemporary development of aircraft and industrial gas-turbine engines shows that the creation of competitive engines of a new generation is impossible without the development and wide application of ceramic composite materials, – says Dmitry Karelin, Deputy General Designer of UEC-Saturn for Research Activities. – Only with the use of high-temperature CCM it is possible to solve the tasks of weight reduction and engine fuel conservation. Developing reliable HP parts of gas-turbine engines on the basis of such materials is a complicated problem; specialists in many countries of the world are working at its solution. We are carrying out activities aimed at the creation of a critical baseline technology embracing the whole cycle of manufacturing aviation engine parts from ceramic composite materials”.

As a part of United Engine Corporation, UEC-Saturn is participating in International Aviation and Space Show MAKS-2017 which takes place in Zhukovsky.
