The airplane is named after Pavel Derunov, a distinguished aircraft engine builder, who left a notable mark in the history of Russian aviation and the Yaroslavl Region.
“Derunov’s epoch was the time of large-scale creation, progressive ideas, and their realization, – Dmitry Mironov, Acting Governor of the Yaroslavl Region, pointed out during the event. – In Rybinsk there is a monument to Pavel Derunov. One of the central squares in the town is also named after him. And now the airframe of Aeroflot’s newest aircraft glorifies his name. That is the recognition of great services rendered by our region and by, first of all, Rybinsk engine builders to Russia.”
The ceremony was attended by Valentina Tereshkova, a Russian State Duma deputy, the first female cosmonaut; representatives of Aeroflot’s and United Aircraft Corporation’s management, Viktor Polyakov, Deputy General Director – Managing Director of UEC-Saturn, veterans and young people of the company, Pavel Derunov’s great grandson.

I want to wish Saturn a great success and to thank Dmitry Mironov, Chief of the Region, very much. You have done a lot for this aircraft to bear the name of our eminent fellow-countryman.”
Pavel Derunov headed and developed the Rybinsk Scientific Production Association of Engine Building for a long time. At present this company UEC-Saturn produces SaM146 engines which power SSJ 100 aircraft operated by the leading Russian airline.
«It is deeply symbolic that the aircraft named after the legendary director will be operated by Aeroflot", – emphasized Viktor Polyakov, Managing Director of UEC-Saturn. – Many vehicles of this airline flew on Rybinsk engines and we are glad that Rybinsk engines are in service again.”
“Today one of the national carrier’s main functions is participation in the creation of innovative domestic aeronautical products and their entry into commercial air service, - Igor Chalik, Deputy General Director – Director of Flight Operations, stated at the ceremony. – Aeroflot willingly supported the initiative of the Yaroslavl Region to name the first aircraft from a new Sukhoi Superjet 100 batch after Pavel Derunov. I think this name conveys a combination of experience, glorious traditions, and advanced technical thought of home aircraft industry in the best way possible.”
A contract for delivery of 20 Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft to Aeroflot was concluded by the national carrier with the leasing company “VEB-Leasing”, and UAC during the air show MAKS-2017 in the presence of Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation.
In 2016 the first contract for delivery of 30 SSJ 100 airliners was executed. New deliveries will allow Aeroflot to increase the number of aircraft of this type to 50 in their fleet which is the youngest among 20 top airlines in terms of the maximum passenger traffic in the world.
Contacted airplanes are supplied in a two-class configuration: 12 seats in the business class cabin and 75 in the economy class cabin. Currently Aeroflot operates SSJ 100 of the same specification – for 87 passengers.
The Sukhoi Superjet 100 named after P. Derunov with SaM146 engines is to start Aeroflot’s regular flights this year.Information
