The UEC's representative reported of pulsating detonating technologies in engines to the guests of the World Festival of Youth and Students

Vasily Bogdanov, Doctor of Engineering Science, expert of the advanced development and experimental investigation design department of Rybinsk PJSC "UEC-Saturn" (a part of United Engine Corporation (JSC), a Rostec State Corporation company) reported of the advantages and development prospects of pulsating detonating technologies in the engine-building at the academic program and debate "Aviation of the Future" held in Sochi at the 19th World Festival of Youth and Students.

The sponsors of "Aviation of the Future" program (held from 16th to 21st of October) are UEC, UAC, Russian Helicopters, Moscow Aviation Institute and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. It is to become a platform for discussion of the global aviation industry's advanced technologies and projects by young specialists and students of specific higher education institutions. One the program's tasks the program is to get the talented youth motivated to working in aircraft industry. Vasily Bogdanov, who is also Professor of Solovyev Rybinsk State Aviation Technical University, delivered his speech during the panel discussion "The green aircraft". This discussion was also attended by Sergey Chernyshev, CEO of the TSAGI Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute, and Aleksandr Prokhorov, Deputy CEO of the P.I. Baranov Central Institute of Aviation Motor Development.

"Gas turbine engineering is on the flat curve now, and the progress in this direction is rather complicated. Therefore, the interest has resumed to the pulsating operation in the jet engineering, - said Vasily Bogdanov.  - All leading engine-building companies in the world are carrying out investigations in this field. Speaking of ‘UEC-Saturn’, we have created a new type high-efficient combustion chamber of the constant volume that ensures pressure increase in 7-8 times without detonation.  At operation of such a combustion chamber with the ejection channel, the effect of thrust increase may reach 250% by means of high-efficient wave adding of air mass.  Research and development activities are successfully carried out in order to design a nozzle with the resonator - augmenter for common gas turbine engines".

Vasily Bogdanov recalled that the gas turbine engine consists of two major parts: the HP part (engine core) that determines engine perfection as a heat engine, and the LP part that defines thrust efficiency and ensures noise reduction. 

"The HP core could be replaced in principle by explosive combustion or detonation combustion, - says Vasily Bogdanov. - What is a detonation wave? It is an impact wave displaced along the fuel-air mixture. The impact wave compresses the fuel-air mixture like a compressor, consumes it as in the GTE's combustion chamber.  Then, an expansion occurs (like in the turbine), and we obtain power-consuming gas flow."

Pulsating detonation technologies can also be more environmental friendly, highlighted the UEC's representative.

"If we move to our main subject of today's discussion, i.e. noise and pollutant emissions, I would like to point out, that when thermodynamic efficiency increases, there is less fuel combustion, and therefore there are less polluting emissions, - said Vasily Bogdanov. - The noise is decreased by reducing the mass carrier flow at air mass adding in the ejection channel, by increasing the ergonomics. Besides, pulsating detonating engines should be less metal-consuming in their design".

Panel discussion "The green aircraft" was attended by the students of technical institutions of higher education, employees of aircraft industry enterprises of Russia, delegates of the World Festival of Youth and Students from Iran, India and other countries.

"I take part in such a big forum for the first time ever - there are corporations, institutes here, - says Oleg Trofimov, Chief specialist of the production system transformation department of PJSC "Kuznetsov" (a part of United Engine Corporation (JSC).   - This discussion is very interesting, since lecturers raised the topics about the development of aviation of the future, i.e. not only what we see now".

"I consider this discussion to be very useful. We have learned much about the trends and principles of the "green aircraft" development, - pointed out Sergey Ilukhin, design engineer of Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant (a part of "Russian Helicopters" (JSC). - I decided to add a few words about the topic of my professional activity and asked about a helicopter. There was a lot of information, it was very useful, and I am pretty confident I will be able to use it in my professional sphere".

The investigations on the subject of pulsating detonation technologies in Russia have been initiated by Lyul'ka Moscow experimental design bureau (PJSC "UEC-UMPO"'s subsidiary). The experimental design bureau continues working in this direction.

The exhibition area with models of engines, aircraft and helicopters was organized within the program "Aviation of the future". UEC presents the PD-14 commercial turbo fan engine designed for МС-21-300 airliner, AL-31F turbo fan engines (for the SU-27 aircraft family) and AI-222-25 (for Yak-130 combat-capable trainer aircraft).
