United Engine Corporation (a Rostec State Corporation company) introduced their experience of the effective engineering system forming and LEAN production implementation and their plans on the transfer to "digital production" to the participants of the academic program and debate "Aviation of the Future" at the ongoing 19th World Festival of Youth and Students (WFYS) in Sochi.
"Talking about the current industry in a general context of technologies development, we first of all observe computerization and networking cooperation processes (integration of isolated technologies in a common environment),- said Valery Teplov
, Production Director of United Engine Corporation at the WFYS. - The main features of the next, Industry 4.0, step will be 'visibility' (creation of a digital display or a 'virtual copy' of an enterprise), 'transparancy' (a link between the digital display and analytical systems), 'forecasting' (predictive analytics techniques adapted to production can be used for this purpose) and 'additivity' (a possibility of automation of the functions linked with the business adapting to changing external conditions). It is the ability to work effectively and to compete globally in the context of the above-described forecast technological paradigm which is the long-term objective of the UEC production system reorganizations, implemented by us".
According to Valery Teplov, the production model of the future may be defined as a "smart factory", where products are made by "digital manufacturing" (digital design + additive manufacturing) exclusive of errors, ensuring fast entry into market, unique geometry of products and low cost.
"The strategic targets of the UEC industrial model transformation in the context of the transition to Industry 4.0 are cost reduction, investment program optimization, mastering of advanced technologies in management and production, products delivery stability, production sites compaction, - noted UEC Production Director. LEAN manufacturing is extensively implemented at Russian engine-building enterprises; nevertheless we understand that the transition to 'digital manufacturing' will require the application of optimized principles of LEAN manufacturing, a 'new LEAN'. Thus, according to our estimates, the implementation of the project on creation of one of the specialized centers for aviation engines compressors manufacturing using the 'new LEAN' will decrease approximately twice, while labor productivity will grow twofold.
UEC assigns key importance to LEAN manufacturing principles for improvement of production processes in Russian engine-building branch. The LEAN manufacturing concept aimed at assisting organizations in competitive growth and business efficiency (GOST R 56020-2014). It suggests a complex of methods and tools in all the fields of activity, enabling to produce goods and to render services of a required quality at minimum terms and costs. The application of LEAN manufacturing assumes a certain type of thinking, any activity herewith is considered with relation to its value to a customer and reduction of any kind of loss.
Apart from the lecture by Valery Teplov, a LEAN workshop (a game) conducted by Anna Iakovleva, Head of UEC LEAN Technologies department, also took place within the framework of “Aviation of the Future”.
"Together with the participants we tried to create such an atmosphere of the event for everyone could share his or her experience, to reflect on the changing present and to see his or her place in future realities of the aircraft industry" - said Anna Iakovleva
Currently UEC is mastering the application of LEAN manufacturing techniques at its enterprises. In particular, a trimensual managing committee on the production system development at top management level is established in the holding, reorganization purposes are set, a corporate contest of improvement projects is established, while future and present project leaders and functional areas leaders pass internal certification in the field of LEAN manufacturing.
The Production System Reorganization Workshops are regularly held at different UEC enterprises with participation of external experts. They represent a specific form of practical training for personnel; its main task is in-house bringing up the reorganization leaders able to team-up personnel and to solve certain production tasks and problems at the enterprises using smart software solutions.
The "Aviation of the Future" program taking place as a part of the WFYS is to become a platform for young specialists and students of specific higher education institutions where they could discuss and better understand the global aviation industry's advanced technologies and projects. UEC is a participant and one of the sponsors of the program. Representatives of the corporation make their reports and take part in panel discussions.United Engine Corporation (JSC) (a Rostec State Corporation company) is an integrated organization specialized in the design and development, serial production and after-market support of engines for military and commercial aviation, space programs, the Navy as well as for the oil and gas industry and power generation. One of UEC’s prioritized fields of activity is the implementation of comprehensive programs of development of the industry’s companies by introducing new technologies meeting the world-class standards.
