April 10, 2019, Rybinsk. – April 9, 2019 marked 70 years since the birth of Aleksandr Sergeevich Novikov (1949-2017), a general designer of aircraft engines, a fellow of Russian Academy of Transport, a Doctor of Technical Sciences, a professor. On that day the book "General Designer Aleksandr Sergeevich Novikov" published by publishing house "RMP" in the "Portrait Against the Epoch" series was presented at UEC-Saturn (a part of United Engines Corporation, a Rostec State Corporation company). Workers and veterans of the Rybinsk Engine-Building Design Bureau, A.S. Novikov’s family members, representatives of the Rybinsk administration, municipal educational institutions, and Russian scientific schools gathered in the exhibition hall of UEC-Saturn and then OKB-1 (Experimental Design Bureau) in order to commemorate the man who leaded the Rybinsk Design Bureau in the years of perestroika. According to the meeting participants, the core value of the new edition consists in establishing a life and professional guideline for contemporary young specialists who continue the legacy of several generations of aircraft engine builders.
The work at the book "General Designer Aleksandr Sergeevich Novikov" lasted for one year and a half. This lavishly illustrated documentary and fiction book is based on memories of his colleagues, friends and relatives, on photos and documents from the Novikovs' personal archives. The clear narration chronology reflects the title character’s detailed biography, shows how the time formed the person and how the person himself influenced the time and the environment he lived and worked in.
Aleksandr S. Novikov was born to a family of workers on the 9th of April 1949 in Alma-Ata. In 1954 the family moved to Rybinsk. Here he finished secondary school No. 3; at his 17 he joined the Rybinsk engines-building plant as an assembly fitter and three years later he was transferred to the test shop of the Design Bureau as a mechanic. He studied in the evening department at RATI (Rybinsk Aviation Technological Institute). Upon graduation, he got a job in the calculation and experimental department. His labour contributed to the creation of the giant engine RD36-51A for Tu-144D and to RD36-51B for the M-17 high-altitude aircraft, to the RD-38 "lifters" for sea-based aviation and to the development of "gas generator 077" which later became the basis for a whole range of Saturn's gas-turbine engines. In 1984 he was appointed deputy chief designer for scientific research and advanced developments. He worked under direct supervision of general designer Petr A. Kolesov. In 1988 Aleksandr was elected general designer of the Rybinsk Design Bureau. In the period when the company engaged in unique developments was left destitute, Novikov's activity in fact saved the Rybinsk Design Bureau. After Rybinsk, Aleksandr hold a chair at MAI (Moscow Aviation Institute), was a general director of the Chernyshev Moscow Machine-Building Enterprise, and for the last seven years of his life he worked as a deputy general director of CIAM. Viktor Polyakov
, deputy general director - managing director of UEC-Satrun PJSC: "In the tumultuous years, in the absence of state financing of development and design activities, Aleksandr S. Novikov succeeded in keeping the design bureau personnel. Today's event is a tribute to the person who made a considerable contribution to maintaining and developing our enterprise, to Saturn as it is today with its high design, technological and production potential."
, head of culture department in Rybinsk: "I consider the publication of the book devoted to A.S. Novikov a significant cultural event. Let me express my gratitude to the company's leaders for taking perfectly correct decisions about perpetuating the memory of people who made an outstanding contribution to the enterprise’s development. I appreciate the "RMP" publishing house’s taking on projects so important for our city and implementing them successfully." Sergey Meshkov
, ex deputy chief designer of the Rybinsk Design Bureau: "Aleksandr S. Novikov realized that engineering is not just parameters, but also finances, management and responsibility for the people you lead. He did not only create, he helped people as well. It is an all-round personality, a wonderful man, a genuine general designer." Natalya Novikova
, A.S. Novikov’s wife: "A lot of people willingly responded to the initiative group's request to share their memories of Aleksandr Sergeevich. I thank everyone who assisted in the work over the book. The image of a creator, a real citizen, and a patriot who devoted all of himself to his favourite occupation appeared as a result of common efforts. I wish the current team prosperity, for the work of the people who began designing hardware, developed the company, prevented it from falling down in the years of perestroika to go on successfully."
, director of publishing house "RMP", the author and editor of the book: "When working at the book, it was important for us not only to preserve the outstanding person’s memory, but also to create an image one would like to keep up with. Therefore, first of all I would like this book to be accepted by representatives of young generation who are coming to design bureaus of Rybinsk and not only Rybinsk, for them to understand how one should work, go its way through life in order to reach certain heights. "No one is born a master" but if you are goal-seeking, work on yourself and your self-education you may achieve a lot like Aleksandr S. Novikov."
In publishers’ tradition, the presentation ended with a ceremony of specific stamping of the book with a commemorative stamp which contained the full name of the book - "General Designer Aleksandr Sergeevich Novikov", the date of stamping - April 9, 2019, and the place - Rybinsk.
