January 23, 2020, Rybinsk. – In the Year of Memory and Glory in UEC-Saturn's plan of events dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory there are meetings of the enterprise's veterans - participants of the Great Patriotic War and home front representatives – with Rybinsk schoolchildren and the company's youth. Vasily A. Sharafanenko is one of the active attendees of such meetings with the rising generation.
Vasily A. Sharafanenko, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, a labour veteran of the USSR, a labour veteran of UEC-Saturn, celebrated his 95th birthday last year. In spite of coming from Taganrog, Vasily cast in lot with Rybinsk and its engine-building plant. However, before he found himself in the city on the Volga, he had to follow war routes and to experience the bitterness of losses and the triumph of wins.
In 1941 ten years of secondary school in the countryside were over for Vasily. He worked on a collective farm and was drafted to the army in 1943. Vasily finished a frontline regimental school as a sergeant of an antitank rifle squad and took part in the battles near Mariupol, Melitopol and the Crimea. On the list of the veteran's awards there is a medal "For Courage", an Order of the Patriotic War of the I class and medals "For the Victory Over Germany". In 1944 Vasily arrived in Stalingrad where he had to convoy prisoners of war on construction sites. "In 1944 lots of our employees were sent to Stalingrad. The city was totally ravaged, its restoration and new construction projects were going on in an intensive manner,"
told us Mr Shrafanenko. "I stayed in Stalingrad till 1947, then being wounded and contused, I was discharged and worked in Smolensk for four years."
Later after settling down to married life Vasily moved to Rybinsk, finished the aviation technical school with honours and was sent to the engine building plant. By education he was a non-ferrous metal and alloy casting process man but had to deal with cast iron. "Right at that time the plant was assigned to release diesel engines for a Belarus tractor. And we were engaged in casting industrialization,"
says the veteran. "Afterwards I worked my way up in this foundry from process man to head of foundry engineering office and supervised foundry shops. I left my job in 1986 after 32 years of work at the plant.""War is the worst thing invented by the human,"
believes Vasily Sharafanenko. The most memorable and joyful day for everyone is, of course, the May Victory Day which found me in Stalingrad. I remember mass celebrations in the central square of the City - Square of Fallen Warriors. People were rejoicing after long four years of war."
Vasily inevitably celebrates Victory Day with his family and friends around him. At his advanced age he cordially welcomes guests, eagerly speaks about his life, wishes everybody to live in peace and counts on enjoying good health not only at the 75th but also at the 85th anniversary of the Great Victory.
