August 25, 2020, Rybinsk - On August 25, 2020, within the scope of the International Military-technical Forum “ARMY-2020” there was signed a tripartite agreement about the establishment оf the university mirror engineering centre (UMEC) "Digital Power Engineering" among Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU), the Soloviev Rybinsk State Aviation Technical University (RSATU) and UEC-Saturn PJSC (part of United Engine Corporation, a Rostec State Corporation company).
The UMEC is a joint structure of the SPbPU National Technology Initiative Centre and the partner institution of higher education, targeted at tackling the industrial partner's vital tasks, ensuring transfer of competencies in the domain of digital twins as well as digital design and simulation by uniting university teams in a project and involving them in solving the company's real issues. Setting up such a centre rests on the current scientific and technological groundwork of the project partners, the experience of realization of the NTI roadmap "TechNet" as well as the successful experience of implementation of complex hi-technology projects, including those on global high-tech markets.
The concept of mirror engineering centres was presented by the SPbPU NTI Centre in 2019 and aroused interest of around 50 scientific and educational, industrial and innovative organizations."Today's agreement has resulted from the longstanding systematic cooperation between the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and UEC-Saturn in accordance with the roadmap "NTI TechNet -UEC" and within the consortium of the SPbPU NTI Centre, one of the leading competence centres of the National Technology Initiative, headed by Aleksey I. Borovkov, NTI TechNet workgroup leader,"
says Andrey Rudskoy
, an academician and SPbPU rector. "UEC and SPbPU are implementing a few joint scientific and technological projects; for the benefit of the enterprise there is an annual competitive selection of advanced high-technology startups. The participation of the industrial partner directly interested in work results of the emerging Centre is, thus, crucially important in this agreement.”"Founding a MEC is another step in the implementation of the collaboration agreement within the consortium of the SPbPU NTI Centre and UEC-Saturn, signed during the V International Technological Forum in Rybinsk in March, 2018,"
says Viktor Polyakov
, Deputy General Director - Managing Director of UEC-Saturn. "The uniqueness of our university mirror engineering centre is that it is being established in the territory of a production plant, one of the leaders in the engine-manufacturing industry of Russia. It will make it possible to bring the collaboration between our organizations to a new level, will enable us to engage in network cooperation not only the company's flagship university, the RSATU, but also other Russian higher education institutions."
The UMEC that is being founded now is intended to attain the enterprise's current objectives of laying United Engine Corporation's scientific and technological groundwork and carrying out Research & Development activities. As part of the agreement, the Parties consent to fulfill the following top-priority tasks set by the company management:
- to frame the concept of a single-shaft hybrid power plant, specifications for components and recommendations for a hybrid power plant demonstrator;
- to work through Propulsion Plant variants for an advanced GTE with a capacity of 25-35 mW;
- to optimize the design of GTE parts and to study the technology of part shaping by directed energy deposition.
UMEC specialists will be trained to work with the software applied by the SPbPU Engineering Centre (CompMechLab®) which is the key division of the SPbPU NTI Centre. These knowledge and skills are required to manage activities in the domain of digital design, mathematical modelling and computer-aided engineering, creation of digital twins for products and their manufacturing processes, virtual testing."The introduction of new production technologies (digital design and simulation, digital twins, additive technologies) implies exchange of unique competencies among all the partners and world-class specialist training so as to succeed in planned developments within joint project teams,"
comments Valery Koshkin
, acting rector of the Soloviev RSATU.
Among the nearest plans of the UMEC there are the following: to open a network Master Degree program and to offer refresher courses on the subjects "Artificial Intelligence", "Big Data", "New Production Technologies".Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) is a major Russian technical institution of higher education, a national research university (since 2010) and the recognized leader in training of engineering staff and in multidisciplinary research and development.The Soloviev Rybinsk State Aviation Technical University (RSATU) is one of the leading aerospace higher education institutions in Russia, the basic University of the territorial innovation cluster "Gas Turbine Machinery and Power Engineering" in the Yaroslavl Region, the flagship university of UEC-Saturn, a regional platform of development for sector research and development. The university offers multilevel personnel training on the basis of system cooperation with industrial partners.“UEC-Saturn" PJSC is an engine-manufacturing company specialized in the design and development, production and after-market support of gas turbine engines for commercial aviation, power generation and gas compression as well as for ships and vessels. UEC-Saturn is part of United Engine Corporation. United Engine Corporation JSC (a Rostec State Corporation company) is an integrated organization specialized in the design and development, serial production and after-market support of engines for military and commercial aviation, space programs, the Navy as well as for the oil and gas industry and power generation.
